About Alvarado Score
The Alvarado Score is a clinical scoring system used to diagnose appendicitis in patients presenting with abdominal pain.
Score Components:
- Migration of pain to the right lower quadrant (1 point)
- Anorexia (1 point)
- Nausea/vomiting (1 point)
- Right lower quadrant tenderness (2 points)
- Rebound pain (1 point)
- Elevated temperature (1 point)
- Leukocytosis (2 points)
- Neutrophilia (1 point)
Interpretation:
- 0-3 points: Low risk (3% chance of appendicitis)
- 4-6 points: Intermediate risk (57% chance of appendicitis)
- 7-10 points: High risk (96% chance of appendicitis)
Clinical Significance:
The Alvarado Score helps clinicians determine the likelihood of appendicitis and guides decisions about further diagnostic testing or surgical intervention.
